International Day for Elimination of Violence Against Women is an annual event that is marked on the 25th of November. It was a date that was selected in memory and honor of the Mirabal sisters, three political activists from the Dominican Republic who were brutally murdered in 1960 by order of the country’s then ruler, Rafael Trujillo(1930-1961).

Subsequently, the United Nation officially adopted and designated 25th November as the international day for the elimination of violence against women, inviting governments, international organizations, and NGOs to join together and raise awareness on violence against women. The same date marks the beginning of 16 days of activism against gender-based violence till 10th November which is also International Human Rights Day.

Orange is the color that demonstrates our solidarity in eliminating all forms of violence. Therefore used as the color of the International Day for Elimination of Violence Against Women. Orange symbolizes hope. Orange symbolizes optimism. Orange symbolizes a brighter future. Orange symbolizes a future free of violence against women.

In solidarity, with this cause, Kenya Red Cross Youth call for joint action. To all dawn the color orange on this specific day as we
1) Stand and support all victims and survivors of Gender Based Violence.
2) Challenge discriminatory attitudes against GBV victims
3) Advocate for improved laws and services to end violence against women.
